About Us

Home  Birth Canterbury Association

Home Birth Canterbury (formally known as Canterbury Home Birth Association) was founded in 1976. It is an organisation built on a belief in women and women’s bodies, informed decision making and planned home birth as a safe and appropriate option for well women experiencing a well pregnancy.

Our committee is made up of birthing whānau with a home birthing philosophy, midwives and midwifery students, who volunteer their time to provide support and information to those looking at birthing at home.

Home Birth Canterbury committee representatives attend regional multidisciplinary meetings pertinent to the birthing community to ensure the voice of local home birth givers is heard.

The committee have a monthly gathering to discuss fundraising efforts, consolidate califont and birth pool hire, and organise hampers gifted to home birthing whanau following the birth of their baby; and to share home birth stories.

We offer professional membership to regional midwives; this provides each midwife with access to complimentary hampers for home birthing whanau who are booked with them and a discount off birth pool hire.
